Welding Demo Videos
Welding Demos
Hey everyone, today I wanted to talk about welding demos. Welding is a pretty hand hand-on skill which requires running welds for students that I call demos. Running demos for students show them good habits, techniques and outcomes. I always try to run as many demos as I can in the lab. However, there is major advantages to a video demo instead. Let's watch this welding demo from weld.com.
So I personally like this video because not only is it informational, it is also quite funny. The students always pay a little more attention when humor is mixed in. But what are some of the advantages of a video demo vs real life?
1: Can pause, slow down or rewind.
The first major pro of a video vs real life demo is the ability to pause, slow down or rewind the video to emphasize good techniques. It also allows students to ask questions which I can point out in the video.
2: Can get a better view of the weld.
Welding requires good vision, it also can be a pain learning when you're behind three other students in the way of a demo. Even if I do run a demo for a single student, it can be hard to get the right angle for them to see the puddle. This is why I find videos very helpful in seeing the weld better.
3: Can watch anytime.
Welding students don't usually enjoy classroom time, they would rather be out in the lab and welding as much as possible. However, I always add videos to their welding assignments and offer them to watch them at home or on their breaks at work. I get a lot of compliments from students, knowing they can find videos on the different assignments easily.
4: Don't need equipment.
So which is better?
I personally believe that neither the in-person demo or video demos are better. I believe the better outcome is a mix of both and allowing students to choose which option is better for their learning style. It is important to keep in mind that everyone you train will have their own preference in how they learn. Our job is to adjust and try to help every student reach the outcome.
Great job on the video! I really appreciate the energy you brought to it; you're absolutely right that adding humor makes learning much more engaging. I also found the questions you asked and the feedback you provided on learning advantages and styles very helpful. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to your next video.
