Survey Monkey, a useful monkey.

Image
Hey everyone, today is all about SurveyMonkey. No, it's not a personal monkey who completes surveys. Instead, it's a survey system which allows you to make, submit, and examine results easy and free! I have used SurveyMonkey a few times in my classes at ISU and when teaching at CSI.  A fun survey I use today which I made a while ago is about what kind of dog people prefer. I use it mostly as an example to my welders how different people have different tastes and that translate into welding. Here is the survey if you want to give it a try! This is 100% anonymous by the way. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5CN5KJM The main advantages to surveys is being able to collect data. We have all heard the saying, knowledge is power. I am a firm believer that correct and accurate information is condensed knowledge. Think about it, surveys collect a bunch of answers from a bunch of different people. With this information you can more accurately make the correct decision. So I personally s...

Fun with Craiyon and other AI generation images

Image
Hey everyone, I wanted to talk today about AI image generations. To start, here is a cute dog. Why the dog? Well, the truth is... AI image generation is just fun. If you're anything like me, you can make a mean stickman. However, being able to create images with prompts is just kind of fun. There is an added benefit that AI images aren't perfect and their imperfections can be hilarious. Example A: I found this beauty a few weeks ago. The more I look at it the more I am confused on why the AI generates certain features. I am just in awe at the creativity that can be made from AI images. However, something I am also in awe about is how thought provoking and beautiful the images can be. Example B The prompt for this image was Collage of dystopia and utopia. I don't consider myself an artsy person, but I have many family and friends who suffer from mental illnesses and for some reason this picture hits home for me.  Where do I start making master pieces? I personally like usin...

AI: a great brain storming companion.

AI: A Great Brain Storming Companion.  Welcome back from Spring break! It has seem like quite awhile since we've done a blog post. This particular post is going to be quite interesting. I would like to start by explaining my relationship with AIs. I am quite fluent with using AI chat bots and other sorts. I love brain storming, and sometimes I don't have someone to brainstorm with. I use chat GBT for this. I do a lot of coding on the side for fun, and part of coding is finding errors. I use chat GBT to help me come up with ideas or to help simplify my code. I used to do the same thing with youtube videos, but they sometimes would not pertain to my exact situation. However, with chat GBT it can give me direct feedback on my code. I thought it would be fun to ask chat GBT some pros with AI and see if I used AI in that way. 1: Automate repetitive tasks: Oh yes. 100% I have done this with AI. While the photo shows more logistical stuff, I have used AI to create a basic redundant co...

Welding Demo Videos

Image
Welding Demos Hey everyone, today I wanted to talk about welding demos. Welding is a pretty hand hand-on skill which requires running welds for students that I call demos. Running demos for students show them good habits, techniques and outcomes. I always try to run as many demos as I can in the lab. However, there is major advantages to a video demo instead. Let's watch this welding demo from weld.com.  So I personally like this video because not only is it informational, it is also quite funny. The students always pay a little more attention when humor is mixed in. But what are some of the advantages of a video demo vs real life? 1: Can pause, slow down or rewind. The first major pro of a video vs real life demo is the ability to pause, slow down or rewind the video to emphasize good techniques. It also allows students to ask questions which I can point out in the video.  2: Can get a better view of the weld. Welding requires good vision, it also can be a pain learning when ...

Technology for class

Image
Things have changed Hey everyone, this blog will be a little more about teaching philosophy, modern technology, and my own experiences in the classroom. As a millennial, I have seen technology boom in my lifetime. When I was young, my dad would play cassettes on the radio. My mother had a massive bookcase full of VHS tapes where we would watch many movies, my favorite being Donald Duck in Mathematical land. I can still remember the first time my dad got a family PC where you had to type commands to get it to do anything. My dad also had a massive cellphone for work that was the size of my forearm. There was one time we were on a trip across the country and got lost outside the city of Chicago. My dad then pulled out a paper map from the glove box and showed me how to read it. I also remember about five years later, we got lost on a trip and my brother used his brand new released Iphone to get my mom directions. My dad gifted a laptop for my mom for their anniversary which couldn't ...

Snipping Tool Is Your Friend!

Image
Snipping Tool Hey everyone. I will try and keep this blog shorter than some of my others. However, it will not be any less important! Today I would like to talk about a tool I use for photo editing, document control and so many other things. I am talking about the Microsoft Snipping Tool! Some of you might already be pros, or have never heard of this before. Regardless of your level, I hope you will learn something about the snipping tool today. I want to first start off with the steps of how to use the snipping tool and then I'll talk about how I apply it to my job. Step 1: Type Snipping Tool in your Microsoft search engine. Step 2: Click on Snipping Tool icon. Step 3: Click New Step 4: Drag and select on your screen what you wish to capture. Step 5: Modify, or save imagine. Alrighty, now why might you use this tool? Well, I personally have used this tool many times to capture photocopied welding joints for welding procedure creation. I use it to highlight important details in man...
